For those of you who currently Op or are considering it, very little is required. If I had to list duties it would be as follows:

Extending friendship and goodwill first and foremost. An ability to see humor in people and not focus on the negative. I'm here for a chat, a few laughs and some good trivia. I can only hope that anyone that is a channel Op in the Zoo shares these priorities. If you are prone to getting your feelings hurt or easily angered over a dumb remark in the channel you probably do not want to be an Op.

Kicking and/or banning is something we rarely have needed to do here. If you are confronted with an issue in channel please take it private first and issue a warning. Permanent ban is something that is best reserved for spammers, flooders, and someone who has a track record of starting trouble. Doc would appreciate a conversation with you if you think a permanent ban is necessary.

Doc appreciates your input anytime for ways to improve the channel and the game itself. Any constructive suggestion is welcome.

OH and please come in sometimes! :)

To all visitors, a small reminder..

This is just an IRC channel and is easily replaced by hundreds of others and I know a lot of you spend time in many channels. I appreciate that you have chosen to come here and I encourage you to be yourself and enjoy. But please refrain from posting conversation or remarks that you know to be inflammatory. This is not a place for agendas, be it political, religious, etc. After all,  the world is full of that and we come to IRC to escape the day to day irritants. Also if you are an extremely fast player please allow others a chance if you see them trying hard to get a few points on the game. Be NICE!

Thank you all and I hope you see reason enough to continue to visit the Zoo!!  DrWelby

I have taken a bit of time to poll people's views on the idea of someone playing trivia with the aid of a search engine. The results of the query were interesting.  It came in like this:

The majority of comments were for "no rule against the use of the search engine" supported by the idea that if someone wants "first place" bad enough then they should come around more to stake it out and maintain their rank.  However, I did receive several opposing opinions to this view and these came in obviously from more competitive guests and ops. These people that weighed in were much more adamant and definite about their view. (Because they work hard at the game and rankings - competition matters to them) Most of the "no rule" folks are more passive about their game and do not concern themselves if they don't make top spot and most of their opinions included the qualifier "whatever" or similar somewhere in their email or comments.  This gives the "definite against search engine" opinions a little more weight because they did not include a qualifying phrase.  Thus I believe it's pretty much a 50/50 split here from the folks that participated.

That leaves me to make the choice. This is what I have decided.

*No search engine or web searching will be allowed to answer a quiz question.

Here's  a few of the comments I received!

*To make it
clear, I don't have a problem with someone using google. As you said, most
of us don't, and probably won't.

*Let whoever it is cut and paste if they want.

*Personally I think it sucks doing that after all this is for fun nothing serious

*My suggestion would be that when there was no competition in the room, let a
person do what he or she wants to do. When there is competition in the room, then
the practice perhaps should be banned - although it likely would not make much
difference because the good players here would supply an answer long before it could
ever be found

*It really doesn't bother me if it's done. anybody who really wants to be #1 just has to be in here more

*Any one could google answers if they are the only player. That really doesn't make them the leader. They just have more time to get the answers. I like a challenge myself when someone else is competing.

*I for one am not that competitive and come to doc's for the fun and friendship. But I also acknowledge that there are a lot of people that ARE competitive by nature and come for the trivia...so....there-in lies the dilemma!

*I love the way your channel has a relaxed
feel to it. I can type in something silly or even stupid and no one will
laugh in a nasty way at me.

*I like talking to people
here even more than playing, it does not matter much to me what policy there is. In
fact, I have been coming in recently just to see people.

*"It's only a game."
Make that the motto for your channel

Who Is Dr Welby you ask?

Good Question. Well the nick actually comes from one of the more fatherly of the television doctors of the 1960s aka Marcus Welby MD, as in Medical Doctor. His only purpose in life;  to bring us a dose of his curing of a variety of  human ailments, accidents, mental problems, etc every week via our television sets while retaining his all around "Father Knows Best" approach. You couldn't help but feel better to see that, "No matter what procedure you might endure!!"  that the eventual outcome would be nothing more than a happy bedside moment with him and his ever loyal assistant Consuella.

I have heard it said that the internet is just  a terrible place full of dangerous psychotic people. I immediately thought  "But wait!!!!!   People are just people, aren't they???     SO what  takes place on the internet?      My theory is that the true nature of humanity, in all of our splendor,  blossoms when we can remain anonymous to some degree.     AND HOLY COW,  ARE WE A HORNY SPECIES!  Maybe that's why the world is getting crowded.....

So along comes IRC (internet relay chat)  WOW!  Literally a world community of people with "toooooo" much free time. Just by using a Mirc program you can enter this unbelievable virtual world. A place where we can be anything we want!    Men can be women,  Old can be young again,  we can be cartoon characters and wear clothes we would never be caught dead in,  in"real life"   BUT WAIT!!!       Isn't  this real life?   hmmmm?????

Another good question!!  Can't seem to find an answer to this. Our repetitious lives where we get up and join the traffic jam and proceed  to our boring jobs is the agreed upon "real"    But is it.???      Not so sure.   While all of this is getting worked out the  IRC universe continues and well so the need for a Dr Welby to conduct various experiments and procedures, mostly running around saying dumb things. Oh and by the way "this DrWelby" has a couple of bad habits.....shhhh!    don't tell anyone.... he is waaaaaaay too obsessed with Corndogs and DillyBars

WHO IS CORNDOG????

For my purposes it seemed like the most perfect name for my "trivia bot."  Why not after all? That wonderful treat that originated at county fairs and carnivals around the world shortly after the fall of Atlantis.    It's obvious that that this little bit of stick cuisine still holds powers beyond the powers of mere mortals.  As a "trivia bot"  he knows the answers and maybe you do or maybe you don't!!  Click on his picture and have a look at the power of  his majesty.

It might take a couple minutes if your are on a dialup modem but it's worth the wait.
